FROM THE COUCH 19:

Mike Leitao ~ 01/28/2025

We are switching up From The Couch this week. I want to put less focus on the games this past weekend that were played, and more on the upcoming Super Bowl and all the complaints that are present. Of course I will still give my brief opinion on the game, otherwise it’s not really From The Couch and unlike politicians, I have integrity.

Eagles vs Commanders:

55 points in a playoff game is insane. Unlike the Rams game, no one can complain about weather conditions for the reason the Commanders held onto the ball the way I hold onto life, very poorly. Saquon Barkley should be given Christmas gifts from every running back that gets signed over the next few years in free agency since his incredible performance this year has probably given new life to the running back market and will get some players paid. The score was very lopsided and honestly the game felt that way too. Even though the Commanders were technically close a few times in the game, the Eagles were pretty much in control the whole game and they deserved to win. The big talking point was about the tush push as it always seems to be (you wanna ban it, learn how to stop it, bums). The Commanders players flying into the offense like he was Superman was top-tier comedy, so in reality, Washington won in our hearts.

Chiefs vs Bills:

Another year, another Chiefs Super Bowl appearance. This game was not as badly reffed as online fans will make it seem, sure there were a few bad calls throughout the game but there have been far more egregious calls in the Chiefs favor this year. They continue to get the job done and even when Mahomes isn’t playing at top level they just keep on winning. Josh Allen is embracing the Bills philosophy by losing in the playoffs all the time. 0-4 versus Mahomes in the playoffs and honestly you really have to wonder if it will ever happen or if Allen will be known as the QB who could never get past Mahomes. The Chiefs have their eyes on history as the first team to three-peat and etch their names in the history. Mahomes is also looking to cement himself as not only one of the best of our time, but one of the best of all time. Meanwhile the Bills get to go back to cold and depressing Buffalo as losers, so that’s fun.

If you were online at all during the lead up to these couple of pre-Super Bowl matchups, you would’ve seen one thing consistently. Everyone saying that the best case scenario is Bills vs Commanders and worst case scenario is Chiefs vs Eagles. I understand why people thought that. Regardless of which teams you actually thought were better or more talented, these desired match ups were based solely on people not liking personalities. People don’t like the Chiefs since they win a lot and get a lot of calls in their favor. People don’t like the Eagles since their fans are insane and most people hate Philly fans. Meanwhile, Bills fans are great and the team has never won a Super Bowl so that would be cool and the Commanders have a rookie QB in the midst of an all-time season so them winning would also be cool and new. Of course, everyone’s nightmare scenario came true and all of the internet is pretending like they aren’t going to watch the game since they are upset about the matchup (which is wild, we all know you are going to watch it so just shut up about it already). What’s really funny is that if you are actually a real football fan, this matchup should excite you.

Yes, being a Philly guy means I’m biased towards wanting Philly to do well but let’s be honest here. The Eagles are a way better team than the Commanders, as evident by their absolute murder in the conference championship game. As fun as the story of a rookie QB in the Super Bowl would’ve been, the Eagles were always the better team and thus going to be the team that would provide us with a more enjoyable Super Bowl game. On the flip side in the AFC, yes I do think the Bills in the Super Bowl would’ve been better as we already saw a regular season matchup between the Eagles and Bills and it was incredible and I have no doubt a Super Bowl rematch would’ve been elite. But we shouldn’t lie to ourselves that the Chiefs are still an incredible team who plays close games all the time and seems to always come out on top. Plus, let’s not forget the extra narratives going into the game that provide additional excitement. The Chiefs are looking to become the first team to three-peat a Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes is looking to basically solidify himself as the 2nd greatest QB of all time behind Brady with a win. The Eagles are looking for revenge after losing to the Chiefs two years ago in the Super Bowl and what was the potential start of the dynasty. The Eagles were also the team to stop the Patriots from becoming the first ever team to three-peat, and they have the opportunity to do it again. Simply put, the other Super Bowl matchups would have nowhere near as many interesting and intertwining storylines that do 100% add to the game, even if the salty casual fan won’t admit it. I will say, I was rooting for a Bills vs Eagles Super Bowl as I thought that would provide us with the best game, but unlike the fickle fans online I am not going to pretend to be mad about the matchup. We have an opportunity to witness history, or see Philly party again like it’s 1776. You ask me, that sounds like a perfect Super Bowl matchup.
