FROM THE COUCH 20:

Mike Leitao ~ 02/12/2025

Well we have officially made it through Season 1 of From The Couch. We wrapped up the National Championship a few weeks ago and then the real men played last weekend to cap off another season. As we come to the end, I think it’s only right that we highlight some of the best moments. We had Army being the absolute dawgs of the NCAA before falling to Notre Dame. We had a bad Michigan team beating Ohio State, which then pissed off Ohio State so much they decided to beat the shit out of everyone and win the National Championship. We had Alabama… existing I guess I don’t really remember what they did. We had the Browns being the Browns and the Jets being the Jets and the Bears being the Bears. Yeah the NFL was certainly not as wacky and unpredictable as the NCAA was this year, other than Jayden Daniels leading a football team on its 3rd name in the last few years to the game before the game. But now it’s time for the moment all have been waiting for, to discuss the big game.

The Puppy Bowl:

An absolute banger of a game right here. The 21st annual Puppy Bowl between teams Ruff and Fluff was always going to be a close based on the betting odds, and the players did not disappoint. Team Fluff was looking to win their 3rd championship in 4 years while Ruff was looking for back to back championships in an attempt to start a new dynasty. The game was back and forth throughout, but eventually team Ruff took a lead and it looked like they had the game won. But team Fluff pulled off an incredible comeback to cap off what could very well be one of the greatest dynasties we’ve ever seen. The MVP of the Puppy Bowl was given to Foxtrot, a border collie who did more than enough to warrant this prestigious award. All right, enough bullshit, time for the real recap.

Super Bowl LIX - Eagles vs Chiefs:

This is gonna be a longer breakdown than normal, it’s the biggest game of the year so no shit. Since the Super Bowl takes place two weeks after the Conference Championship games there was more than enough press coverage for everyone to know what’s up. Chiefs going for the 3-peat, Eagles looking for revenge, blah blah blah. When the anthem is sung and the coin is tossed all that shit no longer matters. First off, solid walkouts by both teams, I could definitely feel the energy. Secondly, I didn’t think the National Anthem was as bad as I’m seeing other people complain about, but I also wasn’t really paying that much attention so I don’t know maybe I’m wrong. The coin was tossed and the Chiefs won, the refs were already rigging the game. The Chiefs kicked the ball and the game was off.

Right away it was obvious, the Chiefs defense came in with a simple mindset to play the run and stop Saquon forcing the offense to run through Jalen Hurts. Now I’m not saying this is a bad idea, the Eagles dominated teams all year long with the run so obviously your defensive plan should be to not let them do that. But I find it hard to believe that it wasn’t in the back of the minds of the Chiefs that the last Super Bowl they played Jalen Hurts in he played very well and almost led the Eagles to a win. Regardless, the first two drives of the game resulted in a whole lot of nothing and for a second it seemed as though the defense would be what determined the game. Then the Eagles decided they were bored and started fucking up the Chiefs. Seriously this game was honestly wild, the Eagles just controlled the Chiefs like a dominatrix. They would run the ball a couple times to get to third and medium then either pass to the open man or Hurts would scramble to get the first and repeat and repeat and repeat. Wear the shit out of what is supposed to be a dominant defense and then score. Then when the Chiefs were on offense the Eagles defense decided to fuck Mahomes up. No blitz, but 6 sacks and constant pressure all game long. Multiple interceptions thrown with one being returned for a TD, which caused me to jump off the couch screaming “Let’s go White Boy TD!” I know no one is just box score watching the Super Bowl but I also think it’s important to note this game is a clear example of why you shouldn’t ever do that. Hurts threw for 221 yards and 2 TDs while Mahomes threw for 257 yards and 3 TDs. Yes, the box score will also show Mahomes 2 INTs but Hurts also had an interception. From a strictly box score perspective you would think Mahomes and Hurts were pretty evenly matched. Anyone who watched the game will tell you Mahomes looked like a bottom tier QB other than about 3 throws and Hurts looked like a top QB in the league. The other negative from box score watching is the fact that 40-22 makes this Super Bowl look way closer than it was, which is crazy considering that score is still an 18 point win. 40-14 was the real score of this game.

For the Eagles, between this game and the NFC Championship they honestly looked like one of the greatest teams the league has ever seen, and with a young core that is mostly locked up and will be back next season it’s hard to not imagine them back in the big game looking for another ring and for their own chance to become a dynasty. For the Chiefs, although fans sick of them will tell you this is the downfall we all truly know it’s not. What it is, however, is a wake up call to them that playing that many close games in a season and being so reliant on some fortunate ref calls is never gonna result in a Super Bowl and is most likely to result in a bad loss in front of a lot of people. If the Chiefs want to keep their dynasty hopes alive they will need to be a much more dominant team that wins game decisively, and with a QB like Mahomes and coach like Andy Reid that is certainly possible.

Well, now we just wait for May and the NFL draft. I guess this is goodbye for a while? Nah. I’m sure there will be more than enough dumb shit in both the NFL and other professional sports leagues that there will still be plenty of coach commentary coming.
