TWO GREAT HATES

Summer And The Olympics

Mike Leitao ~ 06/24/2024

Back in 8th century B.C.E. something started that has gone on for over 2,700 years. That of course is the Olympic Games. And a month from now the cycle will start again as the summer Games begin. This could be the first you are hearing of this and in past years you would be ridiculed and asked if you live under a rock. But this year? I would not blame anyone for not even realizing that the Olympics were coming up soon. Maybe because I am a fan of mostly non-Olympic or winter Olympic sports and I try to avoid TV, but I am just more out of the loop than I have been in the past. But like your average 20-something, I do have social media,  I do spend time on it, and I have not seen anything about the upcoming Olympics. Seriously, this is what I know about the Olympics this year and keep in mind these start in ONE MONTH. The Men’s Basketball team for USA is a god squad of a bunch of the best NBA players in the league because they all got offended after none of them wanted to play in the 2023 FIBA World Cup and then the USA didn’t even finish top 3, and people started saying maybe the USA isn’t as good at basketball as they once were. I also know that Caitlin Clark didn’t get selected for either of the Women’s Basketball teams and the fan responses were either “she is the only reason anyone is watching the WNBA right now she deserves a roster spot” or “she is a rookie who isn’t even the front runner for rookie of the year she does not deserve a roster spot just because of her hype”. If you want my opinion (and also the right answer), just wait and see how low the Women’s basketball games do ratings and views-wise and you will have your answer. And the last thing I know about the Olympics isn’t even about these upcoming games, I just know that the 2028 flag football is going to be so entertaining. Seriously, the hype for the Olympics is just not what it used to be. Maybe its because of Covid and that changed people’s care, maybe it’s because the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo were a shit show, I really don’t know. What I do know is that these Olympics will come and go and they will get their fair share of media coverage not because of the excitement or how great they are, but because summer is the worst time of the year for USA sports and sports fans. Regardless of the fact that I do not know if I could even name 10 people competing for the USA this summer off the top of my head, LETS GO USA WOOHOO LET’S GO WIN SOME MEDALS, YEAH!

Speaking of summer, man, isn’t it just the absolute worst. Seriously, unless you are in school and don’t work or you are a teacher, summer is undoubtedly the worst season, and I will argue that point till I die. We already mentioned that if you are a sports fan, you are in tough luck, your options are to rewatch random old games of sports you like or watch baseball and be bored out of your mind. You know what I love, being sweaty all the time or the fact there is always more traffic between Memorial and Labor Day because more people are off. Oh yes, I love everything being more crowded as if it isn’t already hot enough without people being all up in your personal space. What about the beach, everyone loves the beach right? Yeah, I really love overcrowded areas where the sand burns and the water looks so gross if you go in you’ll come out with an infection. What is so good about summer, what is the advantage to places being more crowded and it being hotter outside? Winter clears summer and it’s not even close. More holidays, more sports, not being so sweaty you can create a puddle by standing in the same place for too long, winter is so clearly better. It was in the high 90s this past weekend here in mid-June. Summer just started this past Friday meaning that we are in for July and August where we will surely be having triple digit temperatures for days at a time.

I remember there was a time were 90 plus degree weather was rare, let alone triple digits. Now when we see the weather is below 85 we all rejoice with cheers as we get to enjoy a day where the sun and the heat don’t make us want to end our meaningless existence. I have a summer birthday and I hate it so much. I am sure when I was a kid a summer birthday was awesome, no school my birthday so I could have a party and all of my friends could come and we would have the whole day and it would be great. But now as an adult, I would kill for a winter birthday. People ask what I want to do for my birthday now? Firstly, I want to do nothing since I feel like to an extent celebrating birthdays as an adult with anything more than a small get together and maybe doing some small type of event is weird but that is probably just me being a deeply awful and hateful person. Secondly, all I want to do on a hot summer day where the weather is probably over 100 degrees with crazy high humidity is to not be near a bunch of people who also would rather not be doing something in the heat as we all sweat to death. Although as I read through that again, maybe I am just a hateful person who is taking my anger out on summer and in reality, it really isn’t that bad though…

Nah, summer sucks, winter is better.
