Big Tech’s Warning Shot

They Could If They Wanted To…

Sam Sykes ~ 07/19/2024

So all it takes is a software update to end the world?

On Friday the world came to a grinding halt because Microsoft fucked up a tiny bit. It’s crazy how a major corporation holds the keys to so many of society's essential functions. Banks were seriously affected with outages, creating a scary situation in which accounting for funds, deposits, and withdrawals were reverted to the old system, pen and paper. Hospitals were unable to communicate live-saving information between professionals, endangering thousands of lives worldwide. Law enforcement agencies and correctional facilities were unable to access prisoner data, or even exercise proper surveillance. Flights all over the world were grounded while passenger data was lost in the cloud. This is just a few examples of industries crushed by the great Microsoft outage of 2024. This day will live in history, it is probably not a stretch to say that over a trillion dollars has been lost today in time, resources, customers, and damages.

People always bitch and complain about monopolies, but are all too happy to keep ordering away on Amazon and googling like a motherfucker. I get it, there’s not a lot of alternatives, especially when our jobs depend on these giant conglomerates. But this was a wake up call. The fact that a tiny mistake or flip of the switch can decimate our country (and quite honestly, the world), is terrifying. The U.S. has always had big companies that have failed and ruined select sections of society, but never like this. When the unions destroyed the auto industry in Detroit, forcing them to flee to Mexico and Asia, it killed a city, but honestly helped the industry make cars for a better margin without killing the consumer. Steel was another industry that really hurt middle- and lower-class Americans living in cities, but that too, was recoverable. The closest example we have to today is the stock market crash of the late 20s destroying our economy for years. If it had not been for FDR extending the Great Depression into the 40s, our industries would have bounced back in less than a decade.

If we lost our tech giants, there’s no telling just how big the impact could be. Is there an industry that is not using Alphabet (google), amazon web services, or Microsoft? These are the companies that hold literally all of the data in the world. Any business that has a customer is storing their data on one of the ‘big guys’ platforms. Our military could not function with any version of the cloud going down. Our society has come to rely too heavily on a few selfish, evil, and soulless corporations that could bring our country to it’s knees in one foul swoop. Or worse, hold ransom the government and citizens with merely the threat of a complete shutdown.

It may end up costing Microsoft a shit-ton of money, but in the long run, they won’t just survive, but thrive. Think about it, they just showed the whole world what they can do in a matter of seconds. An incredible show of strength and capacity for doom. It’s a deal with the devil, that we are powerless to stop. They hold the keys to the apocalypse, and are the only ones that can protect us from the monster they have created.
