Beginner’s Guide To Grunge Part 2

This is a continuation of Beginners Guide to Grunge Part 1. That can be viewed here.

Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots)

Stone Temple Pilots are the most underrated band in the big 5. Scott Weiland met Robert DeLeo at a Black Flag concert in Long Beach, California in 1985 at which they discovered they were actually dating the same chick. Instead of letting this incident get between them they decided to kick her to the curb (Fucking baller move) and started making music together alongside Robert’s brother Dean and drummer Eric Kretz. They began gathering a local following using the name “Mighty Joe Young:” until they had to change it due to legal reasons. They began using “STP” for the popular motor oil brand which eventually turned into what we know today as “Stone temple pilots”  in 1989, mainly playing small time gigs. It wasn't until 1992 that they officially released their debut album which is also my favorite grunge era album of all time, Core. There just simply isn't a skip on that entire album, it's amazing from start to finish. Followed by the critically acclaimed Purple in 1994 and Tiny Music… songs from the Vatican gifts Shop in 1996. Scott Weiland also had issues with drugs and later died of a cocaine and meth overdose on his tour bus in 2015.

STP Best Albums:

Core (1992) - Peaked #3 on the charts

Purple (1994) - Reached #1 on the charts

Scott Weiland’s best vocal tracks:

Sin (1992) - Uncharted

Trippin on a hole in a paper heart (1996) - landed at #36 on the US main charts and also reached #1 on the US rock charts

Plush (1992) - landed at #39 on US main charts and also reached #1 on the US rock charts

Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)

I feel like no introduction is needed for this, we all know this one. Formed in Aberdeen, Washington by Lead guitarist/Singer Kurt Cobain, Bassists Krist Novoselic & Drummer Chad Channing in 1987 (Later replaced by Dave Grohl in 1990). They were the forefront of the grunge music movement of the 90s and the first band people think of when talking about music in the 90s. They had really started out as a punk rock band on their earlier albums, mainly on 1989’s Bleach, but later moved onto the more iconic sound in 1991 with Nevermind and later on my personal favorite In Utero in 1993. If we look back from very early on it's clear that Kurt was going to be a star. The issue was Kurt himself never wanted to be famous, he couldn't handle it. He just wanted to make music and be left alone. With the growing media controversies stemming from the drug abuse with his wife Courtney Love while being pregnant with his daughter on top of their already failing/ unstable marriage. It snowballed and he was found dead on April 5th, 1994 with a gunshot wound to his head, a suicide note and double barreled shotgun strewn across his chest. It was labeled “Suicide” though many people have theorized that Courtney Love actually murdered Kurt due to rumors of an oncoming divorce. It seems far-fetched but if you really read into the details it shocks me that she never was accused of having something to do with his death.

Nirvana Best Albums:

Nevermind (1991) Reached #1 on the charts

In Utero (1993) Reached #1 on the charts

Kurt Cobain’s best vocal tracks:

Drain you (1991) - Uncharted

Something in the way (1991) - Reached #46 on the US main charts

Where did you sleep last night? (1994) - Uncharted

Chris Cornell (Soundgarden)

I’m gonna come right out and say it.. I’m not a fan of Soundgarden. and know very little about them. Which is strange, because I love Chris Cornell’s solo work as well as his work on Audioslave and Temple of the Dog. For some reason Soundgarden never impressed me like all the other bands on this article. Even still, I do know their major hits like Black Hole Sun and Burden in my Hand. That's about all I can say about them. As for Chris Cornell, he left Soundgarden in the late 90s, ended up forming Audioslave in 2001 with a few members from Rage Against the Machine and eventually had a successful solo career. Unfortunately, Cornell committed suicide on May 18, 2017. The legacy he left behind will be remembered for generations.

Soundgarden’s best album:

Superunknown (1994) reached #1 on charts

Chris Cornell’s best vocal tracks

Burden in my Hand (1996) - Reached #40 on the US main charts and #1 on the US rock charts

FINAL RANKINGS

  1. Layne Staley (AIC)

  2. Kurt Cobain (Nirvana)

  3. Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam)

  4. Scott Weiland (STP)

  5. Chris Cornell (Soundgarden)

Grunge music gave us many iconic bands and frontmen that made a lasting impact on pop culture as we know it. There will never be any way to replicate what these bands and frontmen did and the impact they left will be continuously passed down from generation to generation.
